How to Install and Setup WordPress SEO Plugin by Yoast

Your website needs a strong SEO plugin that will get your site to the greatest rank on google, and you want it for free(of course). So i strongly recommend you WordPress SEO plugin by Yoast or Joost De Valk.
If you don’t have any SEO plugin you should install WordPress SEO plugin by Yoast, If you don’t know how to install plugin on WordPress check our tutorial “How to install Plugin on WordPress”. If you already have an SEO plugin and you want to replace it with Yoast just simply delete your plugin and install a new one(Yoast SEO plugin). When you install it our tutorial begins..

Interface Settings

When you install Yoast SEO plugin you will see that there is a SEO link in the horizontal and vertical menu.In the horizontal menu you can use some great stuff like Keyword Research.Analyze this page or SEO settings (same like in the vertical menu ). In the keyword research you can use Google Keyword Tool,Aaron Wall’s keyword tool and Google Insights, three very powerful tools for your site. You should check them out!

Screenshot_1

In the ‘Analyse this page‘ link you can check your incoming links to the page.Check your keyword density and check whats in Googles cache or simply get a HTTP header response of the current page via Joost de Valk app. You can find here some really good stuff that will help you with good work on your WordPress blog/site.

In 1.5 version of Yoast SEO plugin we got some new stuff, Google Rich Snippets and Facebook Debugger links which copy the URL you are on and run the page through the corresponding service, its useful, right?

Screenshot_2

Before we start to set up our new Yoast SEO plugin i need to give you some informations. The plugin works from 2 levels: Global and local.
Global settings are sitewide and include basic SEO settings for all your content’s and the whole site, where as local settings are more granular and specific to posts, pages and categories.

Yoast SEO Plugin Global Settings

These settings are global which means that they reflect on the whole site, all content’s, pages, posts and all other things! There’s also a local setting which you can find at the end of this post! Enjoy!

Dashboard

On your left side of WordPress dashboard you will see “SEO” icon and link, click on it. You will get a page like in the picture below.Welcome to your new SEO dashboard! First what i recommend to do is to strat the tour by clicking the link “start tour”, like in the picture below.

tut 1

This tour will introduce you to plugin. When you are done with that quick tour go back to Dashboard and follow my steps!

Tracking – you can check this, it will help Yoast team to develoupe plugin. So let’s thank them for this plugin by leaving this checked!

Security – if you have authors on your blog/site I recommend you to check this, just for the extra security!

Webmaster Tools – leave this empty if you already got your site on these webmaster tools, if you haven’t click on the links and make them! Its useful!

Titles & Metas

The next section is “Titles & Metas” with 5 tabs( General, Home, Post types, Taxonomies and Other).

tut 2

Now let’s go tab by tab and modife those settings like we want!

Tab 1 – General

Tittle Settings

Tittles are the most important factons in on-page SEO! The title’s are hidden in the head of an html document as a meta tag but displayed in browsers at TAB area, like in the picture below.

tut 3

Search Engines will record this meta tag and give value to its importance of what keywords are used in it – typically it should not exceed 70 characters and title’s should have a natural flow and be relevant to the content of the page/site/blog/post – so do not put too much keywords in it, it’s messy!

Force Rewrite Titles – I will leave this checked, but some themes have additional codes which make the title of the blog appear twice, if this happend you need to replace code <?php wp_title(”); ?> with <title><?php wp_title(”); ?></title> in header.php file! To find Header.php file just go to Appearance > Editor. And that’s all..

Title Separator – like it says, its about separator in your titles, i use the first one, it’s your choice!

Sitewide meta settings

NOindex subpages of Archives – Check the box to prevent Google from indexing additional pages of content that are already indexed.

Use meta keywords tag – meta keywords aren’t so popular right now and search engines, do not give them the importance. My advice is to check them but don’t spend more than a minute on editing it, when you check it a meta keyword input place will apear on global and local settings.

noodp & noydir – i prefer to leave this uncheked, this is for DMOZ/Yahoo directory users.

Tab 2 – Home

tut 4

We are now editing your homepage SEO, fill out these settings like you want, use variables from “Help”  drop down menu(help).

Title template – here you can add custom variables, just like you want! If you want your title to look like mine(mine) add variables like in the picture above!

tut 13

I wont bother you with those settings, just fill it like i did, we don’t index this so we don’t want to spend more than a minute here!

Social

With more SEO weight being put on social media signals you need to interlink your site with your Facebook and other social media sites like Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest and many more. The Yoast SEO plugin allows you to publish facebook and twitter meta data tags in the head section of your pages or groups, these tags can use snippets of your data for use in your Facebook links. You can also enter a Facebook admin and go back to Facebook to see insights, cool stuff here!

tut 14

Facebook

tut 15

Add Open Graph meta data – Facebook uses OpenGraph meta tags from the head of your document which allows Facebook to retrieve objects on your page and use them properly structured in Facebook pages or links posted on Facebook, you can enable these tags by checking the “Add Open Graph meta data” box or just disable it if you want, i whouldnt recommend that.

Facebook Insights and Admins – If you want to see insights you can add facebook admin or use an app if you have it, your insights are located here.

Facebook page URL – here you can enter your facebook page.

Frontpage settings – These are the title, description and image used in the Open Graph meta tags on the front page of your site. This title, description and image will show up when someone posts a link of your homepage on facebook!

Default settings – if post/page does not contain images this will apear like default image.

Twitter

The Twitter Tab is pretty self explanatory – chose to add in a Twitter meta tag and enter your Twitter name down there.

tut 16

Google +

If you have Google + page for your business you can add URL, check “Add Google+ specific post meta data (excluding author metadata)” box.

tut 17

XML Sitemaps

tut 18

If you don’t have and dont use any other plugins for Sitemaps then you will want this enabled which will then give further options – the default settings are pretty much what you want; no content exclusions and all major search engines notified when new content is published. Here you can exclude content you want if you just want it exluded on the search index.
Each time new content is added to your site the sitemaps got and and update it, the search engines notified of your new sitemap which in turn will get your content indexed faster and also notify you of any errors in the Webmaster tools account, really cool stuff right?
You can set up settings just like i did in the picture above.

Permalinks

tut 19

You should put settings just like i did, in new versions of WordPress permalinks are automatically fixed. To see permalinks main settings go to Settings > Permalinks in your WordPress sidebar Dashboard.

Posts – i will put a category, i recommend you to do the same!

How to insert breadcrumbs in your theme

To enable breadcrumbs you need to add this php code in your theme.

<?php if ( function_exists(‘yoast_breadcrumb’) ) {
yoast_breadcrumb(‘<p id=”breadcrumbs”>’,'</p>’);
} ?>

You just need to put this code into your theme templates. you can put this code where you want so feel free to experiment!

tut 22

If you had some others SEO plugins like Head Space, All in one SEO or WooThemes SEO framework you can import settings from them in your new Yoast plugin. Cool, right? You can also import from other Yoast Plugins – Robots/RSS and Breadcrumbs – once you have imported just delete the older plugins.
